Gateways for data protocols have been around in other industries for a long time. Healthcare does have additional issues and challenges, which can be overcome. <br /><br />Certain problems are better resolved when you start from a clean slate with only a fixed complete set of requirement and no bias of preexisting systems, protocol or data structures.
